Last day of summer makes you reflect on the past summer. Of course during Covid times it was harder to go out on the street, but there were a lot of enjoyable days walking the streets of Amsterdam and seeing people enjoy summer, a man eating an ice cream, a woman squinting her eyes while enjoying the rays of sun on her face, a couple having that much needed talk outside while staring over the water.
Last year just before my big operation I got married and we took a boat from Amsterdam to Zaanse Schans with our family and friends. On our one year anniversary we revisited the place, just the two of us by car. Due to Covid-19 there were far less tourists this time at Zaanse Schans to enjoy the view and visit the windmills. We took a round trip on a boat every other spot was taped off, personnel working at Zaanse Schans are wearing masks to protect them selves and others from the Covid 19 virus.

Elk jaar in december zet Circus Zanzara zijn tent op in het Westerpark. Zanzara betekent “Mug”; het is een klein circus met een super leuke show voor kinderen en hun (groot-)ouders. De show loopt meestal tot ergens in januari.

Amsterdam CS during rush hour. Like in life, people pass you by, some faces pop out and some faces blur in the background. More so when you suddenly get life threatening Ill and you don’t know how long you have left. Some people surface and stand right beside you, help you pull trough and give light to your day. Some people fade and blur in the background.
Some people take a deep breath and decide to ignore you while you are standing a couple of feet away taking street photos. Never be that person.
Never.Be.That.Person
In mijn buurt is er een winkel waarop op het raam staat “Viswinkel”. Dat betekent “Vishandel”. Je kunt er aanstekers, bestek, tassen, tajines, alles wat je maar kunt bedenken, kopen, behalve vis, zo lijkt het, in deze winkel.
Meestal is de winkel gesloten, maar op sommige dagen, wanneer de zon schijnt, opent de winkeleigenaar de deuren en plaatst hij zijn goederen buiten op de stoep.
Dan zet de winkeleigenaar twee stoelen op de stoep en zit hij met zijn vrouw buiten in de zon, waar ze samen thee drinken en kruiswoordpuzzels maken. Hij is van Marokkaanse afkomst en zij is Nederlands.
Vandaag is hij alleen, zonder zijn vrouw. Misschien had hij geen zin om de stoelen buiten te zetten als zij er niet is. Hij zit op een straatpaal en vangt de laatste zonnestralen aan het begin van de herfst.
Ondertussen is de winkelier overleden en is de winkel gesloten, dit was een van de laatste kleine winkeltjes hier in de Staatsliedenbuurt. Tegenover zat groenteboer Safa en wat verderop zat slagerij en groenteboer Ali.

Exploring negative space at the playground. End of summer start of autumn is one of my favorite times to go out and take pictures. Shadows are long, warm light bounces of the buildings at the end of the day you can find excellent light and dark contrasts during that time.
Visiting Zaanse Schans by boat with our family and friends. Chinese tourists come in busloads just to take the perfect shot. It turns out that our blond friends are a special attraction, more interesting then the windmills that they came to see.
